I plan to install laminate flooring in my kitchen.?

The floor currently has a sheet linoleum product on it. I know the laminate flooring instructions indicate that it can be installed over most anything but really shouldn't I remove the linoleum and check the sub floor for irregularities/squeeking;etc???
