Why do people say exercise makes a person look "better"?

Your friend and girlfriend think they look better because they have lost weight and gained muscle. Also they think this because the media has portrayed being skinny on girls attractive and being a muscular guy attractive. As for beauty I think that is in the eyes of the beholder no matter what country you are in. Everybody has their own definition as to what beautiful is.
